Answer ALS is the single largest and most comprehensive ALS research project in history, producing more ALS data than has ever been amassed, while openly sharing with the global research community. We are using that data to investigate the unique pathways of each variation of ALS and begin to develop the right treatments or cure. We believe that only a large-scale concerted and coordinated effort will make the difference in finding the answers to ALS. Answer ALS is an unprecedented approach to understanding and defeating the disease.

New to UNO, Answer ALS is beginning to engage with UNO on several levels. One direction is with UNO’s Data Analytics program to help us best explore the massive trove of data collected on the disease and those living with it. Additionally, we are looking forward engaging with the Computer Science program to help us expand medical home monitoring through assistive device and mobile applications.

Coastal Environments, Inc. (CEI) is a Baton Rouge-based small business that has provided applied science, cultural resource management (CRM), and planning services since 1967. Our activities have included GPR survey at the Passebon Cottage site (Orleans Parish), which was the focus of an UNO field school. CEI has also provided training of an UNO graduate student on CEI GPS equipment related to the survey of Holt Cemetery (Orleans Parish) as part of MA thesis work. CEI has employed an UNO student.

Eurofins CAL is a core and primary strategic partner with the University in the mutual interest to: 1) Provide a unique bioanalytical research and technical testing service to support global customers in the food, pharma, agricultural and dietary supplement markets. Eurofins’ global customer base is wide and includes governmental agencies, large food manufacturers and ingredient suppliers, 2) Bring special bioanalytical research projects from these companies to the University. The university instrument capabilities, faculty resources, student labor, and Eurofins participation would significantly enlarge our respective individual resources, 3) Allow donations of Eurofins instrumentation to university researchers, and extend our experience in environmental and food analysis to university researchers, 4) Provide teaching resources to the university from our experienced scientists in the form of seminars and possibly adjuncts, 5)Hire undergraduates, undergraduate interns, graduates, and graduate student interns. HNTB is proud to be located in the University of New Orleans Research and Technology Park having the opportunity to engage the University’s students, faculty and resources. HNTB has worked with the university in many ways. We have completed a soils strength study in conjunction with the UNO Engineering School studying how soils react to further compression when loaded by future levee lifts. We have engaged the UNO Transportation Institute when counting pedestrian and bicycle usage for the City of New Orleans. We have employed 3 UNO students as interns over the past 5 years, of which 2 have been hired as full-time civil engineers. At present, we employ 6 full-time UNO civil engineers in the New Orleans office and 1 UNO alum in our Baton Rouge office. Of the 3 engineering departments in the Gulf Coast District, 2 are led by UNO graduates.

Founded in 1993, the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is a national non-profit health organization domiciled in New Orleans. Many people of color and their families in the Greater New Orleans area do not have access to programs that address their full mental, emotional and physical health. This prevents people in our city from living fully healthy lives and weakens our communities. Because of this, IWES works with communities, schools, individuals and organizations to provide tailored health and wellness services that address this lack of health options and access. We combine advocacy, health education, research and direct services to improve wellness in local communities. Ultimately, when New Orleans is a city that puts health first, our people live happier, more resilient lives and our communities will be stronger!

Currently our Director of Government Services, Sales Manager, Marketing lead, and many systems engineers were UNO graduates.  LATG technical management provided volunteer mentoring for UNO’s 3-Day Start-Up program.  We also consult with UNO Computer Science department on academics and course development to help position graduates for optimal career success in the IT industry.

Summary:
In 2011, a class action lawsuit judgement ordered certain tobacco companies to fund a 10-year smoking cessation program to benefit more than 200,000 Louisiana smokers who are members of the plaintiff class (the Scott Class). The funds from this court order were used to create the Smoking Cessation Trust (SCT).

Connection with UNO:
Smoking Cessation Trust in 2015 entered into a (LOA) agreement with UNO to do a collaborative Internship program with Senior’s in the UNO “Human Performance and Health Promotion Practicum.” SCTMS has completed two separate internships for 2015 & 2016. Several benefits for the intended Interns was to provide new and fresh insight, serve as a mentor, involve them in the community and business world so they can interact with agencies in the community, and involve them in real planning and business strategy sessions. The overall purpose and goal of the internship was to involve and expose these Senior’s (Interns) in the health services delivery aspect of our Smoking Cessation program and our relationship with Hospital, Physicians, and Health System around Louisiana. Another goal of the internship was to assist the Interns with Human performance / Human promotion while helping develop the students educational objective in coordination with the human performance and health promotion program. Since SCTMS leverages technology to conduct its business operations across a state wide initiative, another core focus of the program was to expose and educate interns on how technology and smart systems can be utilized to stream line process and improve user experiences while reducing a paper the foot print, manual re-work, and delayed and inconsistent response which can be found when process really on the human factor.

Since Team Gleason’s inception, the organization has made a significant impact on the lives of people living with ALS in all 50 states. The Water Institute of the Gulf, based in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, is a not-for-profit, independent applied research and technical services institution with a mission to help coastal and deltaic communities thoughtfully prepare for an uncertain future. Through an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, our work helps create more resilient communities, thriving economies, and healthy environment.
Founded in 2012, by state, local, and coastal leaders, the Institute’s mission is to connect the vast knowledge about coastal, river, and delta systems researchers have accumulated over the decades and apply it to coastal challenges in Louisiana and beyond. The Institute links academic, public, private sector, and nonprofit scientific research and conducts applied research to inform and improve decision making.
In 2020, Louisiana’s Governor named the Institute as the state’s Coastal Innovation and Collaboration Hub with the purpose of gathering the expertise that is currently disbursed across government, universities, nonprofits, communities, and private firms into a single focal point for collaboration. In addition, this hub housed at the Institute will be the home of a model repository to provide access to researchers and technical experts to models and databases for better collaborative research.
The Institute’s coastal ecology, human dimensions, applied geosciences, and coastal and deltaic systems modeling team members work hand in hand on projects to provide a holistic, integrated and nuanced approach to complex challenges.

The Water Institute of the Gulf, The University of New Orleans and the Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences at UNO collaborate on research projects and in the pursuit of new research initiatives. Six of the Institute’s technical team members are UNO graduates with five of those team members currently serving as adjunct facility at UNO. Two additional technical team members are pursuing advanced degrees at UNO and the Institute regularly works with UNO interns and graduate students on a variety of work. In addition to the sharing of students and research, the Institute and UNO share many resources such as field and laboratory equipment to make that work possible.

In addition Rose Angelocci, UNO TRAC’s Rehabilitation Training Specialist, and Neisha Jackson, Virage Community Services Administrator/ Employment Specialist both serve on the Louisiana APSE (Association of People Supporting Employment) board.
